Brian Lazanik has received invitations to perform his uniquely twisted brand of stand-up comedy across Canada and around the world. His more notable television appearances have included a Just For Laughs gala presentation on CBC, the festival’s Christmas special and their feature presentation of “Just For Sports.” He appeared on the Mike Bullard Show, had his own half-hour “Comedy Now” special on CTV and was recognizable on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing". Brian has also featured on the international showcase “The World Stands Up” for Paramount television in the UK and CBC radio’s “Accent on Toronto.” In addition to his Canadian festival appearances, Brian has also performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland and the Carling Weekend Reading Festival in Reading, England. Brian now divides his performance schedule between Canada, the United States, The United Kingdom and the Far East. He has also been honoured with a nomination for a Canadian Comedy Award.
His career didn't start this way however, he went to university to become a lawyer. It took Brian Lazanik a while to figure out that the laughs in the legal profession were too few and far between.
So after five years at the bar, first in New York state doing real estate law – "that was exciting," he deadpans – followed by criminal and immigration law back home in Canada, the Willowdale native "ditched" the legal profession for comedy. Boy! – were his parents pleased by his career change."Of course, they were thrilled their son, who they were hoping was going to be an international lawyer, had now ditched it all for comedy,'" said the "30-something" comic archly.
But there is doubtlessly some consolation for Lazanik's parents in the fact that their son is a genuinely funny guy – funny enough to make a good living doing standup comedy, funny enough to get a half-hour Comedy Now special on CTV and funny enough to be chosen two years in a row to be among the Canadian finalists selected for the NBC series Last Comic Standing.
He has been to Hong Kong and Bali and gotten particularly great reviews in London, where he said the comedy club scene is exploding. "The audiences are great. If they love you, they really love you. They treat standups over there like rock stars from the '70s," Lazanik said.
